Hastings Country House

At Hastings House Country House Hotel, a member of Small Luxury Hotels located on British Columbia’s Salt Spring Island, the Dungeness crab, is a regular feature on the menu.

Getaway package allows guests to catch their own crab, learn crab preparation and indulge in a variety of dishes showcasing the crab. A two-night/three-day Crab Catch package runs from May 1 to Sept. 30, and is priced starting at $650 CAD ($593) per person double. The package includes continental breakfast daily, afternoon treats, a crab excursion (including the crab catch) and a four-course Chef’s dinner of crab specialties.

Each couple will receive a recipe book and measuring tool to take home. The Crab Catch Package at Hastings House includes an afternoon excursion with Salt Spring Island crab fisherman, Gary Le Marchant, on a crabbing boat. Guests will be outfitted with rain slickers and issued a crab fishing license. Le Marchant will give an onboard hands-on workshop on crabs: how to tell male from female, which ones to cook, how to pick them up safely, and back at the dock, how to clean the crab.

After returning to shore, guests take their catch of crab back to Hastings House for dinner the following night. Executive Chef Marcel Kauer will demonstrate the best way to cook and dress a crab, before he creates a crab-themed dinner.
