Eco Regions of Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan’s landscapes reflect the long-term interaction of its geology and climate, and recently of is people. The shape of the landscape has to do largely with geology, particularly the glacial history. The ecological land classification system describes the landscapes of Saskatchewan using physical and biological characteristics.

Prairie Zone

Once dominated by native grasses, grain fields now occupy the vast sweep of treeless plains freckled with marshes and aspen groves. The Prairie Ecozone is divided into bands. In the southwest the landscape is a dry, treeless grassland with sand dunes and intermittent badlands. To the north the land changes to rolling plains dotted with potholes and cut by coulees and broad river valleys, including the spectacular Qu’Appelle and Souris. Further north the land changes to a mosaic of grasslands and aspen groves before it meets the boreal forest.

Boreal Plain Zone

Bordered by the north by the Shield and to the south by the prairie parkland, this landscape has a subdued rolling appearance with an abundance of large and small lakes. Dominated by the vast boreal forest of white spruce, jack pine and aspen, the forests grow taller here than elsewhere in the province.

Boreal Shield Zone

This is a land of water and forest, typical of the Precambrian Shield; a mix of rock outcrops, wetlands and lakes created by the repeated scraping and gouging of numerous glaciations, characterizes the landscape. Lakes, accounting for as much as 40% of the area, are typically long and narrow, linked by stretches of fast flowing rivers. Broadly rolling uplands and lowlands support low growing stands of black spruce and jack pine forests, intermittent with low lying boggy areas.

Taiga Shield Zone

To the far north of Saskatchewan, glaciers scraped this ice-scoured landscape of lakes and rock outcrops. The terrain is harsh, with a vast pattern of swamps, bogs and forests of stunted black spruce and tamarack. Ancient Precambrian rocks rise in places 100 metres from the surrounding rolling terrain, giving some of the zone its rugged, almost mountainous appearance.
