Note: The Alabama State Parks are in the beginning of a six-year renovation process, in which park facilities will be completed renovated and refurbished to better serve guests. Call to confirm availability of facilities.
Alabama State Parks offers motels, rustic cabins, chalets, and stone cottages to the public. Free cabin privileges include fishing, boat launching, picnic and barbecue areas. Complete furnishings are supplied in guest cabins, cottages, and chalets, including bedding, ranges, refrigerators, heat and hot water. Children under 6 are free. Reservations for cabins or chalets and cottages can be made through the toll free line, or contact the park direct. Two night minimum rental on rustic cabins and chalets from May 1 to August 31. There is a two-night minimum weekend rental rate from Sept. 1 to November 30 and a three night minimum rental on holiday weekends, such as Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. For seasonal rates after the summer season call the toll free number for special rates on lodges and resorts. Check-in time at most of the park accommodations is 4 pm. with check-out at 1 pm. No personal checks cashed. Major credit cards are accepted for lodging. There are 11 state parks in Alabama that offer lodging.

The park, located between Birmingham and Atlanta, sits atop Cheaha Mountain, highest point in Alabama, at 2,407 feet above sea level. The Talladega National Forest surrounds the 2,719 acre park. Hike to the observation deck, or use the swimming pool, lake and numerous trails for recreation. The park is a mountain retreat with peaceful woodlands, bicycle rentals, lake fishing, and the DeSoto Caverns for exploring. The park has rustic cabins with fireplaces, sleeping from 4-8 persons. Two night minimum rental on rustic cabins and cottages. The resort is open May 1-August 31.

There are 15 chalets and stone cabins that sleep from 2-8 persons, a place to escape from the noise of TV and phones. Linens, cooking utensils and outdoor grills are furnished. All have fireplaces for cozy winter nights.

Located four miles S of Auburn, just off I-85 in E central Alabama. This 696-acre park includes cottages, fishing, nature trails, and rental boats and beach area. There is a picnic area with grills and shelter, and hiking trails and playgrounds.
Rates: Rustic cabins, with a capacity of four is $32 a day or $192 a week for 1-4 persons; capacity for 6 persons is $40 a day and $240 a week.

This 960-acre park offers fishing, swimming in a 25-acre lake, rental boats, and two restored vacation cottages.. There are hiking trails, picnic areas, with shelters, tables and grills, and a small primitive and modern campground.

The 5,067 acre park is two hours from Birmingham. The 40-mile Little River Canyon runs through the park, offering waterfalls, hiking in the wildflowers and views from Lookout Mountain. The gorge is the deepest E of the Mississippi There is a 20-mile drive on the rim of the canyon. The park is divided into three sections: DeSoto Falls, The Resort and Camping Area, and Little River Canyon. There is a pool, tennis, and 20 miles of hiking trails along the canyon floor. Snow skiing is near the park. The DeSoto Lodge has a restaurant, huge fireplace, wood beams and panoramic views from the porch. The 25 guest rooms have TV and telephones. There are 22 cabins in the park; 11 are modern (chalets), and 11 are rustic. The cabins sleep from 4-10 persons, and all have AC, electric heat, kitchenettes, and baths; some have fireplaces. All are furnished with linens, utensils, dishes and silverware. Some cabins have fireplaces, with rates depending on fireplaces.

There are 25 guest rooms in a secluded mountaintop lodge, all with country porch, complete with rocking chairs for lounging. Most rooms have two double beds, some with king sized beds, cable TV and telephone. In the same complex is a gift shop, banquet facilities, and a restaurant for fine dining. Three meeting rooms are available for small groups. Menus offer a wide variety of choices.

The park is 75 minutes SE of Mobile, on the Gulf of Mexico, with more than 6,000 acres in the park. There are nearly 3 miles of white sandy beach, restaurant, fishing pier, 18-hole golf course, freshwater fishing, and swimming. Visit historic forts and homes in the area.
There is a total of 15 vacation cottages, some sleep 4, while the modern lake-side cabins sleep 6. Cabins and cottage can be rented from May to Labor Day.. Additional guests are charged $3 a night. There is lodging also in the main lodge with 30 guest units. The lodge has a restaurant and lounge.

Located near the Tennessee border, 60 minutes W. of Huntsville, this 26,650-acre park is divided into three areas: Wheeler Dam area, First Creek area and Elk River area. Hiking trails wind through the woodlands and the North Alabama mountains. The resort complex includes a modern marina, beach complex, and pool, lighted tennis courts, campground, fishing and an 18-hole golf course; nearby is Helen Keller's home. The chalet-style cottages are built of redwood and stone and are located near the lodge. The First Creek area is two miles W of Rogersville, off Hwy. 72. No cabins or cottages are in this area. The Elk River area is located in Limestone County, 15 miles W. of Athens, AL. This area has a group lodge sleeping 30.

This park is located in the Tennessee River Valley, overlooking Guntersville Reservoir and 5,909 acres of ridges and meadows. Hike in the pines and woodlands, or golf or play tennis at the resort. The 18-hole golf course has a pro shop, cart rental, modern swimming beach and bathhouse near the campground. Rent bicycles, canoes or bring your own boat. Over 20 miles of trails, once used by the Cherokee Indians, cross the park. In the interior, 7 miles of automobile roads pass along bluffs, offering scenic panoramas. At Lake Guntersville Lodge, dine at the Chandelier Dining Room. The complex has meeting rooms for up to 800; 94 spacious rooms and six suites are part of the complex, each with refrigerator, TV, wet bar, bath, and living room area. Most have double beds and balconies. The family cottages and Swiss-style chalets offer special weekend or vacation get-away packages. Each chalet has two bedrooms and three double beds, living room with fireplace, bathroom, efficiency kitchen, TV, telephone, sun deck and maid service. All cottages have ovens, refrigerators, and access to park facilities. The chalets sleep from 1-6 persons. The 16- lake view cottages sleep from 1-8 and each has two bedrooms with 4 double beds, living room, kitchen, two baths, telephone and deck, all linens are provided. Each has electric heat and AC. This 1,220-acre park is on the Georgia and Alabama border, 85 miles SE of Montgomery. The picturesque deep South park is in a natural setting of forests and lakes. The park has two pools, a complete marina for boating, fishing and water-skiing, tennis and an 18-hole golf course. Hiking is in the woodlands. Nearby are historic churches, landmarks and homes. Cabins and cottages are open during the summer season from April to October 31.

MONTE SANO STATE PARK

This 2,140 acre park overlooks the city of Huntsville, with beautiful mountain scenery, and ten miles from the Alabama Space and Rocket Center. The CCC and the National Park Service developed the park in the 1930s. Hike on the Hawk View and White Oak Trails to the fire tower or O'Shanghnessy Point. The Warpath Ridge Trail is 12 miles long, leading to Gurley. The Mountain Mist Trail leads to the Stone Cuts. Panther's Knob and the Sinks, with Teakettle Cave. There is a planetarium on the Black Walnut Trail, near the camping area. The park also features and amphitheater, country store and cabins. The 145 cabins, constructed of native stones and logs, are on a ridge overlooking Huntsville.

This is the largest Alabama state park with 9,940 acres, offering piney ridges and green valleys. Facilities include a demonstration farm, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and trails, 18-hole golf course, marina, and Old Mountain Handcrafted items. There is even a BMX track with sanctioned bicycle races in the summer. Hike along the interpretive trails. The park has its own nature center located off Terrace Drive. Call 205/620-2520 for groups. Get a separate trail map of all the trails. For fishing, two 86-acre lakes are stocked with bream, bass and catfish. A complete line of bait is available. Bait shop is 205/620-2528. The park has no horses of its own, but can board them..

This park is a great place to get away from it all, and is located in secluded pine forests one hour SW of Selma. The 200-acre park features a 9-hole golf course, boat facilities, bathhouses, laundry, fishing, and boat launching. The five spacious vacation cottages each have two bedrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen with refrigerator, oven and utensils. Linens are furnished.
