There are over 40 recreational cabins for rent by the State of Alaska. The cabins are located along trails and near remote lakes, streams and saltwater beaches. Most cabins are accessible by either floatplane, wheelplane, boat or trail, year around. Only two cabins are accessible by road. Hikers should prepare for backcountry travel and provide for emergency shelter if unable to reach the cabin.

Cabin designs vary. Only the Shuyak Island cabins have dishware, a propane stove, and lights. All cabins have a woodstove for heating only. All have nearby latrines.

Renters should take insect repellent in the spring and summer, an air mattress or pad, and sleeping gear, gas or propane stoves for cooking and purification system. Most cabins are nearby a water source, although the water needs purifying.

Bring your own firewood, or gather it near the cabin. Only dead and down wood can be used. Because of the scarcity of wood, please limit its use to heating the stove, and not for outdoor campfires. Occasionally, the State Park supplies firewood. Leave a supply of wood for the next cabin user, if possible. Some of the newer cabins have oil stove, inquire about the proper fuel for these stoves.

Charter aircraft services are available to all cabins.

Many cabins are near excellent hunting and fishing areas. Copies of regulations are available from the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game, 333 Raspberry Rd., Anchorage, AK 99518; 907/433-0541.

Weather: The weather is variable year around, and you should have warm clothing, including rain gear. Bring clothing appropriate for the season. Backcountry weather reports are not provided by the State Parks. Snow can occur at any time of the year.

Bears: Common around many recreational cabins. Burn trash. Do not feed the bears. Keep food and cooking items neat and clean. Wear Bear Bells. All wildlife is unpredictable.

REGULATIONS:

You must have a cabin permit for use.

No fireworks or explosives allowed.

Pets must be on a leash.

Littering is illegal – pack it out.

Only dead and down wood can be used for firewood.

Camping near a cabin is not allowed
