There are many recreational cabins in the Alaska wilderness, all available for rental at very low rates. They are listed here individually under each National Forest. Most Forest Service cabins are located along trails, near remote lakes and streams and saltwater beaches. They are accessible via floatplane, wheelplane, boat or trail. Trail users should be prepared for rigorous backcountry travel, and to provide emergency shelter in the event of inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions that may prevent reaching the cabin when expected.

The Forest Service provides boats and other cabin-related equipment at many cabins, but these items are not always guaranteed, so please ask when your application is accepted for a cabin. Refunds are not made if items are not serviceable or available. Boat users must provide an approved U.S. Coast Guard flotation device for each passenger aboard the boat. A small outboard motor, in the 2 to 7.5 horsepower range, may make your trip more enjoyable. Fishing and hunting regulations are available from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, 333 Raspberry Road, Anchorage, AK 99518.

Be sure to have your permit on you while using the cabin, and remember, always be prepared for the unexpected in the Alaskan wilderness. Bring your own food, gear, and Coleman cookstove in order to meet most situations.

Alaska cabins are listed according to area: Chugach National Forest, Misty Fjords National Monument, Tongass National Forest near Ketchikan, Tongass National Forest near Stikine, Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge and State Parks.

NOTE: The reservation procedures for cabins and campgrounds in the Chugach and Tongass National Forests have changed.. There are several options: Call by phone or book over the Internet with a major credit card. You can continue to come into the Forest Service Visitor Centers and district offices to make your reservation. Unscheduled lotteries will be eliminated, and reservations are confirmed instantly on a first come-first served basis. Cancellations and changes to your reservation can also be made over the phone. A $10 service fee will be accessed for processing refunds and changes. Over the phone you can get a tentative reservation if payment is by cashier’s check or money order and it is received at the Call Center within ten days. If you are making your reservations at selected Visitor Centers or district offices, you may use credit cards, cash, cashier’s check, money order or personal check. The Call Center opened on October 15, 1998. Many reservation outlets of the Forest Service will provide telephone access with full service. Unauthorized use of a public cabin is subject to a fine of $5,000, up to six months imprisonment, or both.

TRANSPORTATION When planning a trip to a saltwater cabin, pay attention to any tide information given. The lower the tide, the longer the walk to the cabin – sometimes as much as 2 miles. Some cabins cannot be reached by boat or plane at low tide. You may want to consult local tide tables to determine time of arrival, length of stay, and time of return for your trip. Contact a local air charter company for more information on flying to the cabin. Charter service MUST be booked in advance.

Supplies.: Take your own first aid kit, flashlight with batteries, extra food in case weather conditions prolong your stay. You will need to take your own #1 or #2 diesel fuel. Also, matches in waterproof container, candles or lanterns, sleeping bags, pads, pillows, extra blankets, TP paper, towels, buckets for water, garbage bags, soap, insect repellent, portable cooking stove because cabin stove may not be adequate. At cabins with skiffs, take U.S. Coast Guard flotation devices, and 2-10 hp outboard motors.

Bears: Do not feed bears. It is dangerous and illegal. Burn trash or seal it securely and carry it out with you, so bears are not attracted. Keep food items neat and clean to cut down on odors. When in dense cover, warn bears of your presence by wearing bells.

Water Giardiasis: A nasty intestinal disorder that can be contracted from drinking untreated natural water. The water may look clear and pure, but still boil it. Giardia lamblia will disrupt your trip.

Hypothermia: This condition is caused by exposure to cold, aggravated by moisture, wind, and exhaustion. Prevention measures include appropriate raingear such as polyurethane coated nylon, wool clothing, including cap, a storm proof tent, trail snacks, nuts, jerky and candy, gas stove and plumber’s candle or other reliable fire starter.

Permits are issued for non-commercial purposes to anyone 18 years or older on a first-come, first-served basis. A permit lasts from 12 noon on the assigned day to 12 noon the last day. If there is more than one application for the same cabin on the first day, permits will be awarded by a drawing. Most cabins are popular in August and September. From May 15-August 31, permits for hike-in cabins located along Resurrection Pass, Russian Lakes, Crescent Lake, Crow Pass and McKinley Lake Trails are issued for a maximum of three consecutive nights; the maximum stay at all other cabins in Chugach is 7 consecutive nights. Only one application can be submitted for the same cabin for a given period. Individuals in the same party should not make sequential reservations in an effort to exceed the maximum length of stay permitted.

Charter aircraft services are available for fly-ins to Chugach from Anchorage, Copper Landing, Cordova, Kenai, Moose Pass, Seward, Soldotna, and Valdez. Check the yellow pages in the phone book in these areas.

Forest cabins designs in Chugach include log, A-frame, Pan-Abode, and frame. Cabin furnishings include tables, an oil or woodstove (or both), wooden bunks for 4 or more people. Usually you must bring your own sleeping bag, and of course, your food. There is no electricity, or cooking utensils, so bring a gas, propane, or other Coleman-style stove for cooking. All cabins have outdoor sanitary facilities. Bring your own ax or saw; most cabins have these, but it is not guaranteed.

Drinking water is not provided at Chugach cabins. Water is readily available, but must be boiled for at least 5 minutes to make it potable. Visitors must gather their own firewood for a cabin fire if there is a woodstove, otherwise they must bring in oil (usually #1 diesel). Do not burn driftwood in cabin stoves, the salt content tends to deteriorate the stoves, and you want the next visitor to have a glorious wilderness experience as nice as your own. If bringing in oil for the stove, 5 gallons will usually last 48 hours of continuous summer use, less in winter.

All cabins users must burn combustibles and pack-out any other garbage. If you see others have left garbage, please pick it up and carry it out. Also, it is kind to leave a small supply of cut firewood in the cabin so the next visitor will have an initial fresh wood supply.

This picturesque area in SE Alaska has it all: glaciers, mountains, forests, alpine meadows, fjords, mineral springs and volcanic lava. Misty Fjords National Monument was created by presidential proclamation in 1978. It consists of over 2.3 million acres of the Ketchikan Area, Tongass National Forest. In 1980, Congress designated all but 151,832 acres of the Monument as wilderness. Pieces of land around Wilson Arm and Hyder are the only non-wilderness designations.

There is a wide variety of abundant wildlife, including eagles, bears, deer, mink, beaver, and mountain goats. Whale-watching in the area is popular and you can photograph porpoises, sea lions, and seals, usually seen in Behm Canal and nearby ocean waters. Popular activities include: photography, birdwatching, backpacking, crabbing, beachcombing, canoeing and kayaking. Fishermen may fish for trout or five different kinds of salmon.

The spectacular terrain of Misty Fjords is rugged, remote and wild. Medical facilities are distant and visitors must always be prepared with food, first aid, shelter, warm clothing, and rain gear. First-time visitors may wish to use the services of a guide familiar with the area. There are many bears in the area that become unpredictable when disturbed; many experienced campers wear bells or other noisemakers, and they sleep away from the cooking areas, and keep food supplies out of the bears’ reach.

This area may be reached only by water or by air; no permanent roads exist. Charter air service is available in Ketchikan, Juneau, Petersburg, Wrangell, Haines, and Skagway. Ketchikan is the closest city with frequent commercial jet service from Seattle and Anchorage.
