ITASCA STATE PARK— Douglas Lodge, Lake Itasca, MN 56460; 218-266-3656. Located in N. Minnesota, the park is considered to be the headwaters of the mighty Mississippi River. Visit the Indian Mounds and Wegmann Cabin, hike to the observation tower along Wilderness Drive, bicycle through stands of 200-year old pines, or take a tour aboard the boat "Chester Charles," on Lake Itasca (call 266-3654 for information). The park also has naturalist programs, skiing, snowmobiling, swimming, and boat rentals. Douglas Lodge offers 1, 2, and 3-bedroom cabins and 4-plex cabins. A few of the l-bedroom cabins feature twin or double beds, some have fireplaces. All rent for $39/day. The 2-bedroom cabins feature twin beds in each room, and a double davenport in the living room, $55/day for 4. The 3-bedroom cabins have screened porches, living room with fireplace and double beds, renting at $59. The 4-plex cabins are log buildings with motel-type units, each unit with a living room/bedroom combination, fireplace, dressing room, and screened porch, renting for $35-$38/day for 2. The Nicollet Court is a 2-story motel with 18 guest rooms and lounge, renting from $25-$31 a night. The main lodge suites are 2-room suites with double and single beds and shower, sleeping 4, renting from $34-$39 per night. Plain rooms without a bath rent for $20-$26 a night. The Club House is a 2-story log structure with 10 sleeping rooms, main lobby and is great for family gatherings. The unit rents for $185 per night Mon.—Thurs., or $225 per night on the weekends. Some rooms can be rented by the night only. In addition to these cabins around the park headquarters, there is a cabin located at Squaw Lake, 4 miles W. of Park HQ. The cabin is equipped for housekeeping, with 2 bedrooms, dining and living room with fireplace. There is a hand pump outside for water. Supply your own linen and utensils. Rent is $36/day for 2, with each additional person over 12/$6 a day, under 12/$3 a day. Mail applications only for this cabin; telephone and mail applications for other cabins accepted after April 1.
