607/273-5761

The park is on Rt. 13, S. of Ithaca. Over 10,000 years ago a glacier swept through this area, in central NY, and when it receded, deep, steep-walled valleys were left behind, now partially filled by Cayuga Lake. The earliest human habitation here was the Indian town of Coreorgonel, a small village of 25 log cabins, with cultivated fields and plum and apple orchards. Later, many mills were constructed on the river. The 751-acre park features swimming, bath house, concession stand in summer, camper’s pavilion, hiking trails, nature walks. Four other state parks are nearby. There are 7 type 2 cabins in the park, all with refrigerators, public showers, and screened porches.

Seneca Falls, NY 13148

315/568-5163

The park is on Rt. 89, 3 miles E. of Seneca Falls. When the last glacier retreated thousands of years ago, deep bathtub-like troughs remained. Cayuga Lake is the deepest of these glacial fingerlakes, and is 38.1 mile long and 474 feet deep. Cayuga Lake is named after the Iroquois tribe who lived on the shores. During the Revolutionary War a Continental Army subdued the Indians (who had sided with the British), opening this frontier to settlers. The 186-acre park offers camping, swimming, S pavilions, bathhouse, rec. building, hot showers, boat launching ramp and handicapped accessibility. There are 13 type 2 cabins in the park, with cooking stoves, refrigerators, running water outside and screened porches. Some have public and some have private toilets and showers. FAIR HAVEN BEACH STATE PARK

Fair Haven, NY 13064

315/947-5205

The park is on Rt. 104A, 1 mile N. of Fair Haven. The earliest known history of Fair Haven and Little Sodus Bay dates to the 1600’s when Indians lived along the shores. French traders used the area as a landing place, and in 1872 a harbor was developed on Lake Ontario, where the park is located. In the 1930’s the CCC developed the park, and during World War II a POW camp was constructed at Fair Haven Beach. The cigar-shaped hills around the park, called drumlins, are made of compacted earth and boulders. Sterling Pond once connected with Lake Ontario, but the eroded drumlins isolated it. The 845-acre park has swimming, bathhouse, 3 pavilions, hiking trails, concession stands, hot showers, boat ramps, and water sports. There are 24 type 2 cabins in the park with refrigerators, porches, running water outside, and public toilets and showers.
