BIG RIDGE STATE RUSTIC PARK

Located 25 miles N. of Knoxville, this 3,600-acre park was one of 5 demonstration parks developed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, with the assistance of the National Park Service in the 1930’s. This rugged, heavily wooded park and recreation area along the shores of Norris Lake offers swimming, fishing, boating, hiking and other activities. Canoes, paddle boats and rowboats are rented at Big Ridge Lake. Over 25 miles of trails wind through the park in the summer organized nature and sport programs are conducted. Located near Big Ridge Lake, the 19 rustic vacation cabins are open from April—Oct. Each sleeps 6, with 2 double beds, and a hide-a-bed sofa in one large living area. All have fireplaces, screened porches, and are equipped for light housekeeping. All linens and utensils are furnished. For group camping, 17 bunkhouses sleep from 6-8 persons. The bunkhouses have a large kitchen and dining hall, with all equipment. Two bathhouses with hot showers are centrally located. The bunkhouses are open the same season as the cabins.
CEDARS OF LEBANON STATE PARK

Cedars of Lebanon State Park is 31 miles E. of Nashville, 6 miles S. of I40 on U.S. Hwy 231. This park is named after the dense cedar woodlands of ancient biblical history, and features the largest red cedar groves in the U.S. (actually, the tree is not a true cedar, but a juniper). The park was developed as a reforestation project in the 1930’s; before this, many of the trees were cut for pencils. Walk in open limestone glades splashed with rare wildflowers, or find Jackson Cave and the sinkholes along the 8-mile nature trail. Nearby is Stone River Battlefield, and the National Military Park. The park offers an Olympic-sized swimming pool, snack bar, visitor’s center, nature trails, cultural center, and campstore. A modern group lodge is open year around for organized groups. The lodge has a modern kitchen with all the equipment and utensils. The separate sleeping facilities sleep up to 40 each with restrooms and showers. Nine new, modern 2-bedroom cabins are also available, year around. All are fully equipped for housekeeping, with refrigerators, stoves, showers, utensils, and linens.
CHICKASAW STATE RUSTIC PARK

This park is 18 miles S. of Jackson on State Rt. 100, on some of the highest land in the state W. of the Tennessee River. The park was created by four federal agencies in 1934, and now is a state forest and wildlife preserve of over 11,215 acres, one of the largest in the state. Winding roads and trails pass through the timberlands of the Chickasaw State Forest, with 2 lakes for swimming, boating, fishing and relaxing; boat rentals are available. Of the 12 vacation cottages in the park, 6 have one bedroom, and 6 have two bedrooms, fully equipped for housekeeping with stoves, refrigerators, showers, utensils, linens, and AC. All are nestled among the pines near Lake Placid. All have fireplaces, and are open year around. The group lodge sleeps up to 40 persons, and is open from Feb.—Oct. The lodge has a kitchen with utensils, and all linens are provided. The group camp accommodates 142 persons, and has a dining hall, cabins, bunks, toilets and its own swimming area. The dining hall has all utensils, but you must provide linens, food and staff. This area is open from April—Oct.
CUMBERLAND MOUNTAIN STATE RUSTIC PARK

The park is 4 miles S. of Crossville on U.S. Hwy. 127-S, 10 minutes from I-40. The 1,720-acre park was created by the Farm Security Administration in 1938 as a homestead area for 250 families. The calm, 40 acre Cumberland Mountain Lake is great for swimming and sunbathing, with a sandy beach and bathhouse. Rowboats, canoes and "dreamboats" are rented by the hour or day. Fishing is permitted at the lake. Recreational sports include a ballfield, volleyball, ping-pong, tennis and horseshoes. There are many scenic hiking trails, and a new 10-mile overnight backpacking trail is now open. A seasonal naturalist program is open in the summer, with movies and slide shows. The 37 rustic, modern, duplex and timber-lodge cabins offer lodging and housekeeping. Each is equipped with electrical appliances, utensils, and linens. All are in wooded areas. The Old Stone Lodge is a group lodge sleeping up to 16 persons, and has a centralized kitchen with all the equipment. The lodge is open year around, with fireplace. The Cumberland Mountain restaurant, overlooking a lake, serves meals twice a day, and has meeting rooms.

he 6,000-acre park is located N. of Smithville along I-40 on the shores of Center Hills Lake, accessible from 140 at Exit 268 and U.S. 141. The park is set in the rolling hills of middle Tennessee, on the edge of the Eastern Highland Rim. Center Hill Dam was constructed in 1948 on the Caney Fork River, creating the lake and later the park. Fishing and boating are popular on Center Hill Lake. Hike along the 3-mile trail or swim in the pool. The 34 cabins are all in one area near the pool; all are 1-bedroom units. All cabins have appliances, utensils and linens, and are open year around.

The park is 11 miles E. of Spencer, and may be reached by Hwys. 111 or 30. This is one of the most scenic parks in the Tennessee park system, with waterfalls, cascades, streams, gorges, timberland, and many recreation facilities and activities. The 16,000-acre park has an 18-hole golf course, pro shop, swimming pool, laundry, bathhouse, amphitheater, snack bar, tennis, ballfields, and store. Canoes, pedal boats, and fishing boats with electric trolling motors are rented at the docks. Hike or take a horseback ride through the fields, gorges and streams. A long distance backpacking trail is open for backcountry stays, or take the shorter self-guided nature trails. The park has 20 two-bedroom cabins, all sleep up to 8, and are completely furnished with stoves, refrigerators, showers, linens, utensils, telephones and TV. All have fireplaces. There are also 10 fishermen cabins, plus, 2-story cabins located directed on Fall Creek Lake. The fishermen cabins have outdoor grills, fishing from the porch, patios and picnic tables. The group lodge serves 104 persons, and is completely equipped with housekeeping, food preparation, and serving. The dorm has 2 floors with private toilets on each for coed living. The dining and kitchen areas are on the ground floor. This facility is open year around, with linens furnished. In addition, 2 group camp areas feature rustic bunkhouses, clustered around central dining halls, bathhouses and recreation buildings. Both camps have swimming beaches, fire rings and staff quarters. Open from April—Oct.; rental by the week during the summers.

The park is 40 miles S. of Nashville on US Hwy. 31A, between Chapel Hill and Lewisburg. Once the former estate of Henry Horton, the 36th governor of the state, the park is located on the shores of Duck River. The park is best known for the resort inn, scenic golf course, and skeet and trap range. There are also canoe rentals, arts and crafts, movies, slide shows, games, horseback riding, gun rentals, stables, and square dances and hayrides in the summer. The park has 4 modern cabins, sleeping 6 each. All cabins have kitchens, AC, fireplaces, TV, and telephones. The Horton Inn provides 72 rooms, and 4 suites with kitchenettes. Each room has 2 double beds, carpet, AC, TV and phone. The restaurant features Southern cuisine.
MEEMAN-SHELBY FOREST STATE RECREATIONAL PARK

The park is in W. Tennessee, 13 miles N. of Memphis, bordering the Mississippi River. Wild turkey and deer abound in the park, which is named after a prominent newspaperman. Over 16 miles of trails meander through the park. Horses are rented at the park stables; phone 901-8765756. The interpretive center has displays, campfires, hikes and tours in the summer. The park also offers field games and horseshoes, plus year around fishing in Poplar Tree Lake. Swim in the Olympic-sized pool, complete with bathhouse and concession. The park has 5 two-bedroom cabins on the shores of Poplar Tree Lake in a wooded section of the park. All have kitchens, linens, and sleep up to 6. The group camp on the Mississippi River and Piersol Group Camp sleep up to 136 persons. The camps have a large dining hall, group cabins, and bathrooms. A swimming pool is at the Mississippi River Camp. The camps are open from April—Oct. Bring your own supplies, food and staff.

The park is 7 miles E. of Dickson on U.S. Hwy 70. The Laurel Furnace of the Cumberland Iron Works iron manufacturing company was located here during early Tennessee history. The park is named after the operator and owner of the Robertson Furnace. The iron industry is now silent in the 3,782-acre trace, but the remains of the Laurel Furnace and ore pit can be seen. The park has complete convention and meeting facilities, inn, restaurant, 18-hole golf course, swimming, fishing, boating, and hiking. Rowboats and "dreamboats" are rented at the lake. Fish on Acorn, Woodhaven or Creech Hollow Lakes. Over 19 miles of foot trails are developed, and three overnight camping shelters are located along a new 11.7 mile hiking trail. The 10 two-bedroom vacation cottages are open year around, and are fully equipped with kitchens and showers. The cabins are very popular in the summers, with a weekly rental required. A minimum of 2 nights is required during the off season. The 40-room Montgomery Bell Inn and Restaurant are open year around. The private pool is located at the inn. A camp with camper cottages has a central dining hall and restrooms, swimming beach and hot showers. Camp 1 sleeps 120, Camp 2 sleeps 116. Both are open only in the summer from May—Sept.

The Natchez Trace State Park is 30 miles NE. of Jackson, 6 miles SE. of Lexington on I40, between Nashville and Memphis. The large, 43,000-acre park is named after the famed Natchez-to-Nashville Trail of the 18th and 19th centuries. The scenic woodlands, lakes, and swimming beach offer unlimited hours of relaxation. Hike through fields and forests, or take a long-distance backpacking trip through the park. Fishing and boating are on 4 lakes; rowboats and pedal boats are rented at Cub Lake. The cabins are located in tall trees on Cub Lake, with a public beach. All sleep 6 persons, and are furnished with AC, fireplaces and linens. Reservations are handled through Pin Oak Lodge. The lodge is on the W. shore of Pin Oak Lake, offering 20 units with single and double accommodations. The restaurant seats 120; a park store and service station are nearby.

The park is in E. Tennessee, 20 miles NW. of Knoxville on U.S. 441. Situated in the ridge and valley region, the 4,000-acre resort park has caves, streams and primeval forests for enjoyment. Miles of trails lead through the watershed. Visit Lenoir Pioneer Museum, an 18th Century grist mill, threshing barn, and shop featuring arts and crafts from Tennessee. The area also has a pool, with recreational equipment. Boating and fishing are on Norris Lake, with a commercial marina located near the dam. The park has 20 rustic cabins, and 10 three-bedroom deluxe cabins. All are in quiet, wooded settings, and are equipped with stoves, refrigerators, showers, carpet, and linens.

The park is located in East Tennessee, 12 miles North of Jamestown, via U.S. Hwy. 127. The 11,752 acre park and forest is in the upper Cumberland Mountains, offering a combination of botanical and geological wonders. The wilderness area of the park offers unusual rock formations, natural bridges, caves and the remains of ancient Indian occupation. Sergeant Alvin York, a hero of W.W.I, had a home in the area which can be reached by a short hike. Adjacent to the park is the 150,000-acre Big South Fork of the Cumberland River National Recreational Area. The park offers 5 chalets, 5 rustic stone cabins, and 5 wooden cottages. Each is equipped with a kitchen, shower, utensils, and linens. The chalets are open year around; the other facilities are open only during the summer months. The group camp area has camper cabins with bathhouse, kitchen and dining lodge. The camp sleeps up to 144 persons, and is open year around; bring your own food, utensils, and linens.

The park is S. of TVA’s Pickwick Dam at the intersection of State Rts. 57 and 128,11 miles S. of Savannah, TN. The park was originally developed by the TVA in the 1930’s, then turned over to the state. A new area, Bruton Branch, has been added to the park; it is located across the lake and is open for primitive camping. The park is a resort park with an 18-hole golf course, pro shop, rental clubs and carts. The pool is located at the inn for cabin and inn guests. Boating and fishing are popular on the lake.
The 20 two-bedroom deluxe cabins are located near the inn, overlooking the lake. The cabins are completely furnished, with central heat and AC, TV, high ceilings, plush decor, patio and fireplace. All cabin guests enjoy inn privileges. The inn overlooks the lake, and provides 75 single and double units, with 3 suites. The inn also provides meeting rooms and a large dining room.

The park is 20 miles SE. of Elizabethton, entirely within the boundaries of Cherokee National Forest, 2 miles from the town of Roan Mountain. Located on a famous lake created by an earthquake in 1811, this park offers some of the most scenic areas in the state. Located on Highway 143. The park offers majestic mountains with minimal development, surrounded by the lush Cherokee National Forest. It is named for nearby 6,285 foot Roan Mountain, one of the highest peaks in the Eastern U.S. Atop the mountain is a 600-acre gard on rhododendron, which paints the mountain in pink and purple blossoms during the early summer, and the annual Rhododendron Festival in late June. Cross-country skiing is popular in the winter months with three developed tails of varying difficulty.
