The Eastern Region of the National Forest Service offers four cabins for rent in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. These are the only Eastern Regional cabins for rent. The cabins rent for $25 a night, or $130 a week. Bring your own sleeping and cooking gear. There are 3 log cabins in the Middle Mountain Ranger District and in the Greenbrier Ranger District. The cabins are secluded in a half acre clearing in red spruce timber on Camp Five Run at an elevation of 3,750 feet in southern Randolph County. One week maximum rental. The usual rental season is from May 1-Oct. 31. The Ranger in Elkins, WV maintains the reservation book.. The cabins can be reached from 2 directions by auto. At Wymer on US 33,16 miles E of Elkins, turn S on Forest Service Road Middle Mountain #14, a gravel road, and continue 19 miles to the entrance. Turn left, E through the pipe gate and continue 1/4 mile to the parking area at cabin. A key is needed for the gate and buildings. The S approach is from W. Virginia Route 28. Turn North off Route 28, 5 miles E of Bartow. Follow Forest Service Road 14, 12 miles to the cabin entrance sign. Road #14 is open year around except for heavy snow season. The Greenbrier Ranger Station is at Bartow.
The cabins each have a range and refrigerator, and 1 has bottled gas and a hot water tank (Cabin #1). There are fireplaces in 3 cabins; no ax or saw provided. Cabin #1 has 2 double beds; cabin #2 has 1 single and 1 double bed; cabin #3 has 2 double bunks. No electricity in any cabin. Water is piped into cabins.
The George Washington National Forest is adjacent to the wilderness area in which the cabins are located. This is nice hiking country, with dramatic color changes in the fall. These cabins are not well known by the public and make a great camping base in the region. Hike to the Sinks of Gandy NE of the cabins.

The parks in the state offers the following types of accommodations:
Cottages/Cabins:
Completely furnished and equipped for housekeeping. They contain utensils, flatware, dishes, dish towels and cloths, sheets, pillowcases, blankets, bath towels and wash cloths. They feature upgraded amenities and contemporary design.Modern Cabins:
These are wood paneled, with open fireplaces and forced air heat, kitchens and appliances, baths with showers.Standard Cabins: The standard cabins are of log, frame, or stone construction, with open fireplaces, built-in kitchens, and baths with showers. These are open from the last weekend in April to the fourth Monday in October, except for the Cass Scenic Railroad Cabins which are open year around
Economy Cabins:
The economy cabins have a 1-room combination living room, kitchen, bedroom with built-in bunk beds, small bath with shower, and a screened porch. Each sleeps 4 people. They are open on Friday before Memorial Day and close after Labor Day. The rustic cabins at Seneca and Kumbrabow are equipped with woodburning kitchen stoves and fireplaces, gas lamps and refrigerators, but water must be drawn from a well. The cabins are open the last weekend in April and close the second Monday in December.Rustic Cabins: Equipped with gas lamps, woodburning kitchen stove, fireplace for heat and gas refrigerator. Water at the rustic cabins must be lugged in from a nearby well. Sanitary facilities outside.
No pets allowed in cottages or cabins. Check- in is 4 pm and check-out is 10 am. Cots and cribs are $5 handling fee if not reserved in advance. Cabins can be rented by the day, 2-day weekend or longer. Cabin weeks usually run from 4 pm. on Monday to 9 am. the following Monday.
Lodge Accommodations
Rates vary by season. When available cots are $5 per night. Additional charge for person in a room over double occupancy - $6. No additional charge for cribs. Children under the age of 13 stay free in parent’s room. Lodge check in is 3 pm and check out is noon, but check, there may be exceptions. No pets allowed in lodge rooms.

The 4,127-acre park has a pool, rowboat, paddleboat and sailboat rentals, lake and stream fishing, tennis, hiking and cross-country ski trails, horseback riding, seasonal nature and recreation programs. Bathhouse, restaurant, and commissary are open in summer.
Cabins:
There are 13 standard log cabins, 5 standard frame cabins and 8 economy cabins for a total of 26 cabins. Each standard cabin features a wood burning fireplace, fully-equipped kitchen and bath with shower. The economy cabins are a combinaiton living/dining/bedroom with built-in double bunks or twin bunks, small bath with shower, and a screened-in porch. Located in the scenic, mountainous Potomac highlands, the park is named for the amber-colored waters plunging 5 stories and then flow through an 8-mile gorge. The black water is a result of leached tannic acids from hemlock and spruce needles. Observation points offer views along the half-mile wide canyon. Stairways and boardwalks lead to the falls.
The 1,600-acre park has lake swimming, rental rowboats and paddle boats, and fishing at Lake Pendleton, plus horseback riding, tennis, hiking and cross-country ski trails, a sled run, and ski rentals at the trading post. The downhill ski resort of Canaan Valley is nearby.
THE BLACKWATER LODGE
The lodge sits on the canyon’s S rim, with a view of the gorge. The 54 AC rooms have private bath, phone and TV. There is also a game room and sitting room with fireplace. The restaurant also overlooks the gorge, and the Woodchuck Lounge serves lunch.
Cabins:

The park is on the state’s second largest body of water, Bluestone Lake. The 2,146-acre park has swimming, rental canoes, rowboats and motor boats, fishing, hunting, hiking trails and seasonal nature programs. Special events at the park include square dances, movies, nature hikes and volleyball games.
Nearby is the Bluestone Public Hunting and Fishing area, and the New River National River. Outdoor dramas are held at Grandview State Park. Whitewater rafting and canoeing are on the New and Bluestone Rivers. The Camp Creek State Forest surrounds the park.

The 25 deluxe and modern cabins have stone fireplaces, forced air furnaces, and kitchens with all modern appliances. The park stretches from the Virginia border to within 5 miles of the Potomac River and W. Virginia’s N border with Maryland. The park’s name is Shawnee for Medicine Water River. Cacapon Mountain at 2,300 feet dominates the park. Spur trails lead to the summit for hikers.
The long, narrow 6,000-acre park offers golf, snack bar, lake swimming, rental rowboats and paddle boats, fishing, horseback riding, picnicking, hiking, cross-country skiing,year-around nature program, and arts/crafts center.
CACOPON LODGE
The lodge features 50 guest rooms with TV, phone, and tub/showers, and a wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. The Old Inn, open in the summer, is a separate facility near the lodge, built by the CCC. The 11-room inn recaptures colonial atmosphere with hand-hewn logs beams, and guest rooms with stone chimneys and wrought iron hardware. The communal kitchen seats 25. Rooms have either connecting, or private baths; singles and doubles are available.
Cottages:
There are 30 cottages in the park; 11 are deluxe, 13 are standard and 6 are economy. The deluxe cottages sleep from 4-8persons. The standard cottages sleep 20 persons. The efficiency cottages sleep 4.

Located in Eastern W. Virginia, by Rt. 28/92 between Dunmore and Green Bank, this authentic railroad remnant was part of a large railroad system that still climbs from the old lumber town of Cass to the summit of Bald Knob, the second highest peak in the state. The train is powered by Shay steam locomotives, and takes passengers into the countryside for a spectacular ride. The train operates from Memorial Day through October on a published schedule. A trip along the scenic Greenbrier River has been added to the line. The special Saturday night train rides include live entertainment and a barbecue.
At Whittaker station you leave the train for a picnic lunch in a vast wilderness. Near the park is the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, with massive radio telescopes gazing into the heavens; tours during the summer, weekends in September and October. Visit the Cass Railroad Diorama, a scale reproduction of the town of Cass during the lumber days.
Cabins:
Guests at Cass Scenic Railroad may chose from among 14 furnished standard, 2-story cottages. Originally, houses from the turn-of-the-century logging town of Cass, these 6, 8, and 10 person cottages have been totally refurbished and feature bathrooms and equipped kitchens, cooking utensils, table ware, towels,linens. Energy efficient woodstoves and electric heaters; 1 cottage is accessible to the disabled. They are open year around and are rented by the day, up to a maximum of two weeks. Nestled in the heart of whitewater rafting country, Hawk’s Nest State Park encompasses 276 acres bordering a rugged section of the New River Gorge National River. Long known for its panoramic views, the park offers a modern, 31 room lodge for the comfort of over night guests. Suites are also available. Below the lodge the New River forms peaceful Hawk’s Nest Lake. Above the lake, the narrow canyon and rushing water create wildwater boating waterways.
From the lodge you are greeted with views of the marina, New River Gorge Bridge and the lake and the aerial tramway that serves the lakeside recreational facilities. Paddle boats are available for rent at the marina and picnic facilities are nearby. The New River Gorge Bridge is the world’s longest single arch span bridge. Ride a jetboat up the river. The second largest park in W. Virginia is set in a narrow valley, surrounded by forested mountains, with some peaks reaching over 2,800 feet. The area is known for heavy rainfall, promoting wildflower and fern growth. The 8,292-acre park has numerous fresh-water streams, including Big Run and Laurel Fork, tributaries of the Holly River for which the park is named.
The park offers seasonal nature and recreation programs, swimming pool, bathhouse, archery, horseshoes, tennis, fishing, hiking, and overnight backpacking trails. The restaurant is open from the end of April through the summer. Nearby is the French Creek Game Farm, Kumbrabow State Forest and Kilmarnock Farm Retreat. Learn about one room school houses at the Windy Gap school near the park headquarters.

Nestled in the mountains of Hardy County, in the Eastern panhandle of W. Virginia, 10 miles from the Virginia state line, this vacation haven offers extensive recreational facilities within a short distance from major metro areas.
The 3,712-acre park offers excellent hiking on trails such as Cranny Crow, at 3,250 feet. A special Braille trail is for the visually impaired guest.

The park is named for the horseshoe curve of the North Fork of the Hughes River. The park is accessible from US Rt. 50, and WV Hwy. 31. The park offers many recreational and cultural programs throughout the year. The 1,405-acre park offers swimming, fishing, tennis, miniature golf, hiking and cross-country skiing, handicapped interpretive trail and an amphitheater seating 500. A golf course is nearby.
NORTH BEND LODGE
Modern designed the 29-room lodge sits atop a breeze-blessed ridge that peers over the woodland river valley below. Decorted with solid oak furnishings, the lodge features guest rooms, each with two double beds, bath, AC, color TV with satellite reception and telephone. An elevator was recently added.
Dine in the glass-enclosed restaurant with views of the mountains. The lodge also offers sitting rooms with a central fireplace, meeting and banquet rooms, outdoor patio, gift shops and crafts.

This park has it all, from sweeping vistas in a remote setting, to sophisticated convention facilities. Located in a windswept plateau in SE West Virginia, the park gets its name from the native pipestem bush that was used by the Indians to make pipes. The park rests on the lip of Bluestone River Gorge. The 4,023-acre park has an arboretum, restaurant, golf courses, swimming (indoors and out), cross-country ski trails, horseback riding, fishing, boating nearby, tennis, sled run, and aerial tramway.
MCKEEVER LODGE
Resting on the lip of the Bluestone River Gorge, the 113-room lodges offers a commanding view of the gorge and mountain ranges. Dine at the Bluestone Dining Room with buffets and home cooked meals and daily breakfast and lunch menus. The dining room is open seasonally. Mulligan’s 18-hole pro shop Restaurant is a sports pub-style eatery located in the clubhouse. The Blackbear Snack Bar features hot dogs and hamburgers. There is also the Pool Snack Bar.
THE MOUNTAIN CREEK LODGE
The 30-room lodge is located in a remote hideaway set at the base of l,000-ft. deep Bluestone Canyon, accessible only by tramway. There are also 25 fully equipped vacations cottages equipped with electric heat, modern baths, TV, fireplaces and balconies or decks, and are open year around. Choose from 2, 3, or 4 bedrooms each.

Secluded on a cool mountain top in S West Virginia is the state’s newest park. The 3,776-acre park has a pioneer farm, camp store, golf course, tennis, and hiking and cross-country ski trails. There are year-round nature and recreation programs. Nearby there is whitewater rafting and canoeing on the New River Gorge National River. The 20-room Twin Falls Lodge is on a peak overlooking an 18-hole golf course, clubhouse and pool complex. Each room has a private balcony or patio, AC, TV, phones, and private baths; suites available. The 13 Twin Falls cabins are secluded on a heavily wooded hillside. All are deluxe with kitchen and modern appliances, utensils, dishes, electric heat, fireplaces, and TV. All linen provided. Restaurant and meeting rooms are nearby.
Mountaintop Lodge
A high wooded ridge commanding a picturesque view of the golf course, pro shop, and swimming pool is the setting for the lodge at Twin Falls Resort State Park. Open since 1970,
this year around facility includes 20 guests rooms, restaurant, meeting and conference rooms, gift shop, nature center. All are AC with outdoor balconies, color TV and phones.

The 2,134-acre park has a 13-mile long lake winding through wooded valleys, excellent for boating, water skiing, scuba diving and swimming. There is also a golf course, and seasonal recreational and nature programs.

The lodge sits on a promontory overlooking the lake. All rooms have double beds, TV, AC, and telephone. The cabins are reserved for a minimum of 1 week during the summer begining the 2nd Monday in June through Labor Day. However, cabins may be rented by the day, or longer from Labor Day to November 1 and mid-April to the 2nd Monday in June. Check-in for the lodge rooms is 3 pm and check-out isnoon. The park’s name comes from Cherokee for "river of islands." The Greenbrier River forms many miles of the park’s boundaries. Many unique trailheads begin in the park, including the Allegheny Trail, Arrowhead Trail, Bearpen Run, Buck and Doe, Honeymoon, Jeese’s Cove, Kennison Run, Monogaseneka, Ten Acre Trail. Horseback riding and skiing trails are also within the park. The area features rental rowboats and paddle boats, fishing, tennis, and golf course nearby. There is a seasonal nature and recreational program.
Cabins:
Of the 33 cabins in the park, 8 are modern 4 person cabins and one 8 person cabin, and 24 standard cabins, sleeping 2-8 persons. The modern cabins are of frame construction featuring beautiful wood paneled walls, forced-air furnaces and stone fireplace. The quaint standard cabins are of log or log and stone construction with natural stone fireplaces.All cabins are equipped with lights, modern kitchen appliances, and bathrooms with showers. They are euqipped with cooking utenils, dishes, flatware, bed linens and towels. Cots and cribs at an additonal charge. The modern cabins are open year around, while the standard cabins are open the last weekend in April and close the fourth Monday in October. Check in is 4 pm and check out is 10 am. No pets allowed in the cabin or in the area.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE FORESTS
The West Virginia Stae Park System is comprised of over 80,000 acres which have been set aside to protect regions of natural wonder, showcase scenic beauty, and preserve sites of historical significance, in addition to recreational opportunities on 100,000 acres of state forest and wildlife management properties.
Reservations:
When making a reservations for 4 nights or more 1/2 of the deposit is required. If you make your reservation by telephone, you have10 days to get the payment to the forest office. Deposits will be returned except for a $15 handling fee, if notice is given 30 days prior. Reservations may be made up to a year in advance. Major credit cards accepted. This 8,123-acre forest is in the heart of Southern West Virginia in Wayne County. Built in the 1930’s the forest gets its unique name from the four surrounding counties from which it serves: CABell, WAYne,LINcoln,MinGO.
Cabwaylingo State Forest is steeped in the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930’s and 1940’s. The CCC Camps were established to rebuild forested acres. During the 1930’s the log cabins were built with stone fireplaces, and also the superintendent’s residence, picnic areas, hiking trails and a fire tower. Many of these structures still exist, and are in use today. Examples of the CCC labor is found in the barracks which now serves as a 100-person group camp. Located near the campgrounds, the historical Tick Ridge FireTower, built in 1935, stands today as one of less than a dozen fire towers still remaining, but not operational, in the State.
Activities:
Swimming in the McClintic Group Camp, where you will find a pool, bathhouse and a pool for children. Lifeguards on duty during pool hours. Open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The park has some of the best picnicking with shelters for any size gathering. Shelters are furnished with picnic tables, fireplaces, playground euqipment, drinking water and toilet facilities. Picnic shelters may be reserved from the main office. A new basketball game court is located near the swimming area.Hiking
: There are numerous trails for hiking. Capture the scenic beauty of the forest with varieties of wildflowers and trees growing in the area. Overhanging rock cliffs provided shelter for early settlers. Trail range from 1-3 miles in length. Map & guide at office.Hunting and Fishing:
Sportsmen will enjoy fishing and hunting in the forest. TwelvePole Creek winds through the forest and is stocked with trout on a monthly basis during the months of February, March, April and May. Hunters are permitted in the forest during respective hunting seasons. Fishing and hunting licenses are purchased in the main office.Cabins
: The cabins are standard with stone fireplaces, electric lighting, showers, and fully-equipped kitchen. All are equipped for housekeeping, with cooking utensils, dishes, flatware, linens, towels and firewood. No pets allowed in the cabins or in cabin area.McClintic Group Camp:
Located near the swimming pool, the camp offers a 100-person fully-equipped facility for organizations and families. The rustic-style camp was formerly the CCC barracks, and features 2 buildings sleeping 50 each and a 3rd building housing the dining hall with kitchen. The forest is in the SE corner of the state near the Virginia/West Virginia border, located in Greenbrier County. Greenbrier State Forest provides over 5,100 acres of heavily forested mountainous terrain for outdoor recreation. There are magnificent views of the surrounding countryside and the imposing 3,200 foot Kate’s Mountain.
Activities and Facilities:
There is hiking along trails from the cabin area. Swimming in the summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day in the pool. A wading pool is also provided. Picnicking sites are offered with tables, fireplaces, firewood, drinking water, toilet facilities and two reservable shelters.Game courts include archery range, muzzleloading, rifle range, horseshoes and volleyball. Playground equipment is provided near the picnic areas. Participate in seasonal naturalist programs.
Hunting and Fishing:

With its rugged highland terrain, the forest is one of West Virginia’s most remote and scenic areas, with elevations ranging from 3,000 –3,855 feet, making it the state’s highest forest. The 9,474-acre park is 8 miles S of Huttonsville. Acquired in 1934, the forest derives its unusual name from the 3 prominent families in the area CUMp, BRAdy, BOWers, who wer e instrumental in its purchase. At one time it contained the finest stands of spruce and hemlock in the state, but was cut down before it came into state ownership. The forest is operated in the multiple use concept and provides recreation and watershed protection.
There is fishing, hunting, hiking, running, and cross-country ski trails, and 5 rustic cabins.

: Deer, bear, turkey, bobcat and ruffed grouse are the most prevalent game in the forest. A state license is required.Fishing:

There are 5 completely furnished Pioneer cabins built in the 1930’s by the CCC. The cabins feature stone fireplaces, wood-burning kitchen stoves, gas lights and refrigerators. These cabins have no running water, but pit toilets are provided. Water is from a well. All are equipped with cooking utensils, dishes, flatware, linens, and towels. Cots available in advance at an additonal charge. Cabins are open from March to early January. Check in is 4 pm and check-out is 10 am. No pets in the cabins or in the area. All cabins sleep from 4-6 persons, and all are very rustic with gas lamps.A deposit is required, with an additional charge for cabins sleeping 5-6. In addition, there are 7 rooms at a small lodge at the forest. All lodging facilities are closed during January, February. and March.

SENECA STATE FOREST

This is the oldest of West Virigina’s state forests. Seneca borders the beautiful Greenbrier River in Pocahontas County. The forest offers rustic guest cabins, a 4-acre lake for trout, bass and bluegill fishing, a small campground and 11,684 acres of lush woodlands for hiking, hunting. The lake and forest are named for the Indian tribe that roamed the area.
Numerous small streams wind their way to the river in the 11,694-acre forest. Hike along the old C&O Railroad beds to Stony Bottom. The highest point in the forest is 3,631 feet, the lowest is 2,250 feet. The Buckskin Council Reservation of the Boys Scouts of America is just outside the park, near Dilley’s old mill. The Allegheny Trail winds through the forest and nearby Greenbrier River Trail is accessible form the forest.
Bicycling
: This is a great place for mountain biking on 38 miles of forest trails and roads. Many camping sites are provided, all with tent pads and fireplaces.Hunting & Fishing:
Permitted in the forest during certain seasons. A 500-foot no hunting zone surrounds all forest facilities. Fishing is in Seneca Lake, stocked with trout in spring and fall. The Greenbrier River offers smallmouth and rock bass. Licenses required for hunting and fishing. Cross-country ski in winter. There are 7 rustic cabins with fireplaces, and a store nearby. The cabins sleep 4-8.Cabins:
There are 7 completely furnished rustic cabins in the forest, built in the late 1930’s by the CCC. The cabins feature stone fireplaces, refrigerators, woodburning kitchen stoves and gas lights.
